When Is a Root Canal Required?

A root canal is an endodontic treatment that is recommended if the tooth’s pulp or nerves become infected or damaged. When left untreated, this kind of infection can cause the tooth to die, which would require an extraction. To restore the health of the tooth, our skilled dentist, at Dental Home, will perform a root canal to remove the infected and injured tissues from within the tooth, clean the tooth, and fill it with a medicated material

What Does a Root Canal Entail?

Root canal treatments can often be completed with minimal discomfort thanks to advanced techniques, tools, and anesthesia. A root canal treatment is usually an in-office procedure performed under local anesthesia that completely numbs the affected tooth.

Surgery

In our office, at Dental Home, the doctor drills into the tooth to expose the root canal and the infected pulp. Then pulp is removed from the chamber, hollowing it out. The next step is the cleaning and desensitization of the tooth. Once the chamber has been cleaned and the nerves are desensitized, the doctor will fill the empty tooth chamber with a biocompatible material that will completely seal off the root canal to prevent any further complications. The process of desensitizing and waiting for the biocompatible material to completely seal off the canal will take anywhere between a few hours to a few days to complete, which is why root canals require multiple visits to our office for completion. Once the canal has been completely sealed, a permanent filling is used to close out the hole in the crown to restore the tooth once again to its full functionality.

Retreatment

Re-treatment is usually a multiple visit process spanning from a few weeks and in severe cases months. Calcium hydroxide paste is placed into the canal to help the cleansing process. On completion, gutta-percha is placed in the newly cleaned canal sealing the tooth from the infected bone. Bone healing is addressed early so that when the final filling material is placed you are on your way to predictable healing.
